Adelaide Proteomics Centre – research across human diseases with Genius XE 35
The Adelaide Proteomics Centre (APC), part of the University of Adelaide (UoA), Australia, is renowned for its state-of-the-art facility for scientists conducting specialized research in proteomics, where the team at APC offers dedicated services in mass-spectrometry based identification of proteins.
In collaboration with SAHMRI (South Australian Health & Medical Research Institute), the team at APC is utilizing LC-MS as the primary application in discovery proteomics and phosphoproteomics, with a focus on blood cancers and stroke research.

Typically, what is the focus of your LC-MS analysis - what sort of applications?
“The main application areas for our LC-MS/MS work are discovery proteomics and phosphoproteomics for the study of patient samples. Working in Adelaide’s biomedical research precinct, we have a translational focus and work across a wide variety of human diseases. Current areas of interest include blood cancers and stroke research.”
What Peak Scientific generators do you have in your laboratory and what LCMS instruments do they supply?
“We have the Peak Genius XE 35 which supplies a Bruker TimsTOF Pro housed in the AHMS building of the University of Adelaide. This instrument, along with others based in SAHMRI’s Proteomics, Metabolomics and MS-Imaging Facility and the Adelaide Proteomics Centre, allows us to collaboratively offer state-of-the-art proteomics services to health and biomedical researchers.”
What prompted you to choose a Peak generator and how long have you used them?
“The Pressure of the reticulated nitrogen and compressed air was not sufficient. The new Genius XE35 also has hydrocarbon removal and we didn’t require additional inline filtration. The generator is simple: plug and play.”
What has been the key benefit of deploying Peak generators as opposed to your previous gas supply solution?
“Peak’s generators are easy to use and intuitive to work with. The pressure is easy to dial up or down as required. Knowledge of the staff is great. Really important to know that there are local trained Peak staff who know their product and helpful by phone or in person for any troubleshooting.”
How would you describe your purchasing experience with Peak in terms of speed of response, ease of ordering, catering for your needs and timing of delivery?
“All fast response from advice, quotation to delivery, installation and commissioning. The ordering process was very easy and the Genius XE35 nitrogen generator was delivered faster than expected.”
Have you ever had a site visit from a Peak engineer, if so, could you describe your experience of this support?
“The Peak engineers and staff always offer a positive and helpful experience, nothing is ever too hard. Always there, even if not a direct Peak issue.”
Would you recommend Peak Scientific generators to other laboratories - and if so, what would be your main reason for the recommendation?
“Yes, I would recommend Peak gas generators. They are a reliable gas supply that is tailored to our specific requirements.”
Genius XE 35 supplying nitrogen to Bruker TimsTOF Pro
The research team at the Adelaide Proteomics Centre (APC), Australia, have benefitted from using a Genius XE 35 nitrogen generator as their nitrogen gas supply for their LC-MS application. Peak’s Genius XE 35 nitrogen generator proved to be the ideal alternative to a gas cylinder or dewar for APC. Having previously used reticulated gas supply, the team experienced issues with pressure which hindered the team’s ability to perform research. However, with a Genius XE 35 nitrogen generator installed and connected to their Bruker TimsTOF Pro, the team at APC are provided with the reliability and consistency they require to be able to conduct their research and collaborate with other health institutions.
Peak’s Genius XE 35 nitrogen generator is robust in its engineering technology, equipped with Multi-Stage Purification™, facilitating gas purification. As the research team point out, this means that no additional filtration is required for the production of nitrogen gas supply, as the nitrogen generator’s built-in purification technology ensures gas contaminants interfering with LC-MS applications, mainly moisture and hydrocarbons, are filtered by the nitrogen generator before the gas reaches the instrument, guaranteeing nitrogen purity of 99.5%.
As highlighted by the research team at APC, switching from bulk supply to a nitrogen generator system was an easy, straightforward process. At Peak, we understand the concerns our customers may have when converting their gas supply, especially when it comes to delivering and installing the nitrogen generator on time to avoid incurring any disruption to the analysis. Our local Peak certified engineers stationed across Australia and the rest of the globe ensure the installation process runs smoothly. Peak engineers also offer their help with any gas generator issues which customers might experience at any stage of a generator’s lifespan, no matter where they are located in Australia.
After experiencing issues with a reticulated supply of nitrogen gas, the obvious solution for the team at APC was to convert to a nitrogen generator system for their LC-MS applications. Having switched to a nitrogen generator system, the research facility at APC has since had the output of their LC-MS analyses increased, thanks to the adjustable pressure of the gas supply and the integrated filtration technology, ensuring the nitrogen gas produced is consistent in both purity and supply. If you would like your lab in Australia to have a reliable, on-demand supply of gas available 24/7, get in touch with us today – we want to help improve your service.
