Zero Air and on-site gas generation

Zero Air is air which has had hydrocarbons removed via a process of oxidative catalysis to ensure it only contains less than 0.1 parts per million (PPM) of total hydrocarbons.

Essentially a mixture of oxygen and nitrogen, zero air is required for laboratory applications which would be negatively affected by the presence of hydrocarbons or small levels of Sulphur or nitrous oxide. These gases can sometimes be present in air due to pollution.

GC (Gas Chromatography) is a laboratory application which requires zero air as it is used as flame support for FIDs (Flame Ionization Detectors) and FPDs (Flame Photometric Detectors). For these applications the zero air is usually supplied in one of two ways, via pressurized gas cylinders or via a gas generator. Gas generators are the more modern, convenient and economical solution for laboratory gas supply as they provide the required gas at the push of a button and their supply never runs out, eliminating the need for repeated orders of gas cylinders.
