How can acid be angelic?

To celebrate this holiday season, we are taking a look at an interesting substance, Angelic Acid.

The acid was discovered by Ludwig Andreas Buchner, a German Pharmacist, in 1842. Buchner isolated it from the roots of Angelica archangelica (commonly known as Garden Angelica) inspiring the acid’s heavenly name.

Angelic acid is a monocarboxylic unsaturated organic acid and it is mostly found in the plants of the family Apiaceae. Ester compounds from Angelic Acid are sometimes found in herbal remedies for minor ailments such as headaches and fever. Should you overindulge this Christmas, you may be interested to know that Angelic acid is also found in some remedies for heartburn.
