Ground Breaking News......

Peak Scientific were pleased to break the first ground to the extension of our Head Office facility in Inchinnan, Scotland. The plans for the extension have been in discussion for nearly 2 years and have been pushed through due to the rapid expansion and the need to meet our production requirements. The extension will more than double the plants size adding an additional level of offices and upgrading the production facilities to a streamlined state of the art facility. At our ground breaking ceremony Robin MacGeachy, Managing Director commented: “It is with great pride that we embark on the new extension to the Peak facility. This will allow us to double our capacity in manufacturing and personnel over the coming years. The new building will also include increased training facilities, Research and Development and Service support. We should be fully operational by the end of the year.”

Peak Scientific Launches the Genius 1022 Nitrogen Generator

Peak Scientific expands on its Genius range with the Genius 1022 nitrogen generator, designed specifically for use with the Thermo Scientific Q Exactive™ Mass Spectrometer.

Peak Scientific’s Genius range of Nitrogen generators has officially added another string to its bow with the introduction of the Genius 1022 Nitrogen Generator. Based on the popular NM32LA model, the 1022 has been modified for unparalleled integration with Thermo Scientific’s Q Exactive™ Mass Spectrometers.

The Q Exactive™ is part of a new generation of Mass Spectrometers with a fast scan speed and multiplexing capabilities, allowing greater confidence in identifying and quantifying a wider range of compounds. The Genius 1022 Nitrogen Generator increases the operational pressure to meet the required input specifications of the Q Exactive™, ensuring a reliable and continuous flow of gas.

“Our Genius 1022 nitrogen generator has been specifically designed to support the higher input pressures demanded from instruments such as Thermo’s Q Exactive™ Mass Spec. Maintaining the balance of compressor cycling at a higher pressure to maximise operational service life, without compromising on the quality of gas delivered by the Peak Genius range.” – Chris Pugh, Engineering Director

The Q Exactive™ brings a new level of sensitivity and performance at bench-top Mass Spectrometer prices, making it a perfect partner for Peak Scientific’s range of high-performance, ultra-quiet bench-top nitrogen generators. The new wave of bench-top mass spectrometry technology is expected to have a significant impact on several areas of research and basic analysis which require LC/MS including food safety, environmental analysis, drug metabolism and clinical research.

Peak Scientific Add NM-3G Nitrogen Generator to Genius Range

Peak Scientific adds to its world-leading Genius range of Gas Generators with the NM-3G Nitrogen Generator.

Launched last year, the Genius range of Gas Generators from Peak Scientific is world-renowned for being smoother, quieter, safer and more efficient than any other generator on the market. Today, the Genius range grew in strength with the addition of the NM-3G Nitrogen Generator.

The NM-3G Nitrogen Generator, designed specifically for use with LC/MS (Liquid Chromatography – Mass Spectrometry) instruments, offers safeguards unique to Peak Scientific generators to deliver reassurance and confidence for critical functionality. When designing the NM-3G, Peak Scientific’s engineers worked with leading LC/MS instrument manufacturers including Waters Corporation, Thermo Fisher Scientific, Agilent Technologies, Shimadzu and Bruker to build a nitrogen generator which would meet the approved flow rates, purities, pressure and, above all, reliability required by LC/MS applications.

The 3G range of generators benefits from improved compressor cycling for longer compressor life and new technology and programming. Crucially, a back-up compressor ensures continuous operation in the unlikely event of one compressor failing. This feature is totally unique to Peak Scientific’s 3G- range of generators, making the NM-3G the only nitrogen generator on the market with this level of reassurance designed for use with all LC/MS instruments.

“The back-up compressor fitted to the NM-3G makes it ideal for use in clinical applications. These generators are designed for situations where failure simply isn’t an option and confidence in the generator is essential.” – Chris Pugh, Engineering Director, Peak Scientific

The NM-3G utilises ‘membrane technology’ to generate nitrogen, separating gases via the principle of selective permeation across the nitrogen membrane wall. Fast gases permeate through the membrane wall more readily than slow gases, separating the original gas mixture into two streams. This allows the generator to isolate nitrogen from normal air, which is fed into the system via internal air compressors making it a standalone system which doesn’t require an external air source. The purity of the desired streams can be adjusted depending on operating conditions, with the system capable of delivering high-purity nitrogen at 30 L/min under normal operating conditions.

As with all Peak Scientific gas generators, the NM-3G comes with their world class after sales service as standard.

How do Pressure Swing Adsorption Nitrogen Generators Work?

Adsorption is a gas separation process whereby the gas molecules adhere to a surface when under pressure. Adsorption allows for the ability to separate specific gasses, such as nitrogen, from compressed air by selecting an adsorbent material which unwanted gases more readily diffuse into. In the case of air-to-nitrogen separation, compressed air is passed through a cylinder containing a Carbon Molecular Sieve as an adsorbent. Oxygen, H2O and CO2 molecules diffuse into the pore structure of the carbon molecular sieve faster than nitrogen molecules, allowing the nitrogen to travel through the carbon molecular sieve column, while the other gases are trapped in the Sieve column.

Once the adsorbent has reached its maximum saturation capacity, the cylinder goes through a depressurisation cycle resulting in near-vacuum conditions inside the cylinder. This results in the by-product gas molecules separating from the adsorbent so they can be flushed from the cylinder making it ready for further use. During the depressurisation cycle the cylinder cannot be used for further nitrogen generation making it unsuitable for applications where a continuous supply of nitrogen would be required.

To ensure the highest purity of nitrogen (up to 99.9995% nitrogen purity can be achieved with PSA Nitrogen generators) and enable continuous, uninterrupted nitrogen production, Pressure Swing Adsorption technology uses two identical Carbon Molecular Sieve columns which are alternately pressurized with compressed air.

When column 1 is pressurized, the non-nitrogen molecules are trapped in the porous carbon molecular sieve material and pure nitrogen travels through the column to be collected in a nitrogen receiver tank. At the same time, the second column is depressurized to atmospheric pressure to vent the trapped contaminant molecules from the column. Then the cycle continues by pressurizing column 2, while column 1 undergoes depressurization. Switching generation between cylinders in this way, with spent cylinders being cleaned whilst another is generating nitrogen, allows for a continuous flow of nitrogen from the generator.
